‘Old’ tennis players back on court

Almost 100 players, including three prominent competitors from Australia, will take part in the i United Tennis Club’s fourth annual veterans’ tournament, which will start at the club's Hagley Park courts today. Many of the players : will be testing their form for the Australasian veterans* team and individual competitions at Wilding Park next week. Heading the Australian challenge will be Colin Thompson (Brisbane), who i was Australian champion

in the 40-45 age group last year. His fellow countrymen in the field will be John Mehaffey and Ray Gregson. As usual, the toughest combination is expected to be Lindsay Blackwell and Bob Pattinson, winners at national level in veterans’ competition. Blackwell and Mrs Diane McKinnel will defend their mixed doubles title, and it will take a strong pair to topple them. The tcrirnament. which is sponsored by Spalding and Park Avenue Traders,

has also drawn entries from two previous winning doubles combinations — Mesdames Jean Bunt and Lynne Fitzgerald, and Jack Reader and Tom Tyler. Brian Crofts, Peter Steinmetz, Stephanie Field and Pat Duckmanton are other prominent players in the line-up.
