Wheat harvest begins
The new wheat harvest is starting in the South Island. By early last week only five samples — all from Marlborough — had been received for testing by the Wheat Research Institute in Christchurch. But by Friday the number received was up to about 150 — mainly from Marlborough and North Canterbury.
The director of the institute, Mr R. W. Cawley, said that so far the quality of the wheat tested had been normal.
Quite a high proportion of the samples so far received have been of the high quality Hilgendorf variety, and as expected, have been of a good standard. Mr Cawley said it was usual for Hilgendorf to form a high proportion of the early samples to come to hand. Four -of the first five samples received this season were insect damaged and therefore unsuitable for milling for flour for breadbaking, but no more samples damaged in this way have been received since.
Snooker.—John Spencer, three times world professional champion, has beaten Graham Miles by 11 frames to seven in the all-British final of an international snooker tournament in Slough, England.
