Racing and trotting Roydon Scott a leading chance for first leg

Special correspondent Wellington Roydon Scott’s easy win in the main race on the first night of the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, along with a favourable front-line draw, make him a leading chance for tonight's $17,500 Wellington (>up, first leg of the T.A.B. double at Hutt Park.

To have any chance ofi Winning the cup a good: draw is a must and with: Roydon Scott starting frorrr [our on the front line, the' Scottish Hanover gelding has a royal chance of taking his earnings close to the $5).000 mark with the winning stake in tonight's race being $11,250.

Roydon Scott is not lhe J most reliable of beginners I from a stand, but he paced II away well on Saturday beifore losing stride for some ; metres racing out of the ; front straight. Saturday’s win in the Pacific Handicap was Roydon : Scott’s second at Hutt Park from five starts. He was

■ brought north for the Febru- ■ try meeting at the park last i year and after an impressive • win in the Inter-Island > Handicap on the first night. > ran third to Main Star and Timely Robin in the Cardi- ■ gan Bay Stakes, on the seci ond night. : Roydon Scott returned to . Wellington for the Septem-

ber meeting but failed to start safely from a stand on either of the two nights finishing last the first night and beating one runner home on the second. In the care of Brian Court while in the North, trainer Fred Fletcher coming to drive the horse on raceday — Roydon Scott looks in the peak of condition and worked well yesterday morning.

Though a dismal failure on the first night of the meeting, Trevira, the early favourite for the race, could still be hard to beat. Trevira broke at the start of the Pacific and lost whatever chance, he may have had. He had little trouble with standing starts last season and Saturday’s run is -perhaps best forgotten. Trevira’s twelfth placing was the first time the Scottish Command gelding had finished further back than sixth in his 18 starts. With 10 wins and five places in those starts his consistent record speaks for itself. Scottish Heath and Lancia form a good pair for George (Noble in the cup. Both raced (well on Saturday. Scottish Heath finishing second and -Lancia fourth. Each has drawn well and can be expected to race, accordingly. If there is to be an upset in the race it could well come from the Jack Smolensk! trained Trevino. Though well beaten on the first night Trevino has raced well at Flutt Park in the past. Earlier this season he won the Port Nicholson Handicap and then ran second to Mister Spyro in the Roydon Lodge Purse.

■ Last year’s winner, Rocky I Tryax, raced well enough to ; suggest successive victories -in the cup when a good (third on Saturday, while (Greg Robinson looked like he could be improved by his race also. He is a talented pacer when right and could easily upset calculations The second leg of the double, the Thunder Handicap will be raced over 2400 m and the George Noble-trained Hanover Star 'looks the likely winner. mm T.A.B.
