’Chute snaps leg
PA Timaru A Timaru parachutist was flown to Timaru Hospital on Sunday after his thigh bone was broken by his parachute’s rigging" lines about 800 metres above Omarama. He is Mr Roger James, aged 25, president of the Caroline Skydivers Club, who is repc-rted to be in a comfortable condition in Timaru Hospital. Mr James described the accident as “one in a million.” It occurred when he tried to open his parachute after free-falling from 2500 metres to about 800 metres. He was falling at 190km/h when he pulled the release. “The bag containing the canopy dropped between my legs and somehow one of the rigging lines got around my leg.” The crack of his leg breaking could be heard from the ground. He managed to overcome the pain and unhook his leg from the tangle “I knew my leg was broken but I thought I would try to land on one leg. It was pretty painful,” he said.
