Woman raped as part of ’initiation ceremony’
PA Auckland The attacker of a 21-year-old Manurewa woman allegedly told her he had to rape her as part of an “initiation ceremony” so he could join a local gang. The rape, early on New Years day. had a similarly unusual aspect to one in South Auckland in recent months — the rapist sat and talked to his victim for several hours after he had violated her. Senior-Sergeant M. J. ■ Campbell, of the Papakura ' C. 1.8.. said that the woman was assaulted and roughed
up by the man, who threatened to kill her if she resisted his demands. The woman finished watching television about 2 a.m. on New Year’s day and went to the bathroom. She opened a kitchen window as she went to the bathroom. She heard a noise in the kitchen and on investigating it was startled to see a young man sitting on the kitchen bench. When she asked him what he wanted he pushed her into the bathroom and assaulted her, as she began screaming and crying. “He put both his hands around her throat and told
her if she did not shut up he could kill her,” said Senior-Sergeant Campbell. "He told the woman he had: to rape someone to get into! a local gang.” The woman! decided that the threats were I serious and decided not to I run or scream any more for help. 'her for nearly three hours: The woman’s attacker said’ ■■ that he was aged 17, and gave I the girl the impression he knew of her workplace and I where she lived. He wanted to rape the: woman again, but she talked him out of it.
