Fiji lashed by cyclone

NZPA Suva Gales and heavy rain lashed the port town of Labasa last evening as Cyclone Fay, with winds up to 60 knots near the centre, passed over northeastern Fiji. The capital, Suva, and centres on the main island of Viti Levu escaped the worst of the cyclone as it veered eastwards from its earlier southerly track. But its centre was expected to pass over Taveuni Island later last evening, and over islands in the centra! Lau group, about 320 kilometres east of Suva, today.
