Teachers seek ban
PA Hamilton Overseas teachers in New Zealand who say they suffer discrimination in pay and position want a ban on New Zealand teachers working in the United Kingdom. This is in retaliation for alleged prejudices against overseas teachers in New Zealand classrooms, said the president of the Overseas Teachers’ Assocation (Mr D. Roberts).
It was unjust that overseas teachers had been called on by the New Zealand Post-Primary Teachers’ Association to strike for pay increases earlier this year, he said.
The P. P. T. A. had never intended that overseas teachers who came after 1971 be paid on the same pay scales as their New Zealand counterparts, Mr Roberts said.
Feelings against overseas teachers had been shown in cases where heads of departments were reluctant to give overseas teachers greater responsibility, he said.
