Tour referees accused of favouritism
NZPA London Referees who controlled the four tests on the All Blacks’ lour have been accused of deliberately ingratiating themselves with the New Zealand management to gain selection for the internationals.
This charge has been made by one of Britain’s best known rugby writers, John Reason, of the London “Daily Telegraph,” who said he had “turned away in embarrassment” at some of the decisions made by referees in line to control forthcoming tests.
Reason, writing on the strong likelihood that Brit-
ish referees will be invited to control the test series between the AU Blacks and France in New Zealand next year, said he shared the view of many in Britain that the All Blacks were entitled to be happy with British refereeing “because they had the rub of the green all through and that advantage continued to the point of possibly deciding international matches.
“It is both degrading and dangerous to allow a touring side to select for an international from refereeing performances in provincial games immediately proceeding that international.”
