New proposal to restructure soccer

The central regional soccer league has become the second regional body to come up with a proposal to restructure the New Zealand Football Association.

The northern regional council has already proposed a national council of 13 to dictate policy and decisionmaking. This, it hopes, will replace the present system which it believes to be outdated and not sound. Its scheme would include two representatives from each of the three regions and one representative from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch. and Dunedin. One of the regional delegates would also represent the minor associations and the New Zealand Junior Football Association, the Referees’ Association, and the Universities’

Association would each have a representative. The council would have an executive of five.

Under the central league’s proposition, a council of 12, with three representatives from the three regional bodies and three members elected at the N.Z.F.A. annual general meeting in February, would govern the sport.

The secretary of . the southern council (Mr Trevor Gottermeyer) said he believed that if this scheme had come before the council at its meeting in Oamaru on Sunday the chances were that it would have been preferred to the northern council’s proposals. One of the key points in the central league's plan is that of associate council

members. For any sub-com-mittees which might be formed, members could be co-opted. Associate members would attend meetings at their own expense unless the council requested them to appear.

The proposed council would act as the executive for the main N.Z.F.A. body and would be required to meet at least four times a year.

While the southern council agreed in principle to its northern counterpart’s proposals, Mr Gottermeyer hopes the northern body will not assume that it has the southern council’s support. “Although we have supported the principle, I hope we have not given them the idea that we will necessarily vote for it,”
