Arts Festival

Sir, —I was saddened when I heard the incoming chairman of the Christchurch Arts Festival Committee say at the annual meeting yesterday that “our orchestra, our choirs, our community theatre and our ballet company must always be the base of our festival.” How can the committee be brought to the realisation that there are two orchestras in Christchurch regarded by the newspapers’ critics as roughly equal in standard? Judging by this year’s audiences it seems that the orchestra favoured by the committee in the past is losing the battle for paying customers. Is it not conceivable that the festival, so financially disastrous last year, would benefit if it treated the orchestras as equals? It is even possible that this action would help resolve the impasse in this area of the city’s musical life. I noted that the retiring chairman, Mr Lascelles, said in his annual report: “ ... it is important that all concerned ... try to resolve what differences there may be . . . Disharmony in the artistic ranks is prejudicial to us all.” —Yours, etc., F. STUART-JONES. December 19, 1978.
