Sutton Quay safety assurance sought

An engineer’s assurance that there was no danger of any additional subsidence around the collapsed wall above Sutton Quay was sought yesterday by the Lyttelton member on the Harbour Board (Mr L. W. Laing). Mr Laing said that twoway access had been cleared to Governor’s Bay, at the Lyttelton end of the road tunnel, and he hoped that the remaining areas were being watched. Mr J. F. Davidson said that

he hoped safety work on the area would be done soon without waiting for the legal wrangle over ownership. The board’s general manager (Mr J. A. McPhail) said that design work to replace the entire wall was in progress; and another meeting would be held to discuss responsibility. The board’s chief engineer (Mr J. B. Bushell) said the area was under surveillance by the Ministry of Works and Development, the Harbour Board, and Lyttelton Borough Council. 1
