Wool barely firm

PA Timaru Prices at the Timaru wool sale yesterday were barely firm on recent rates, although observers in the trade believed it to be a good December auction for the region. H i g h-yielding Merino fleece, which comprised 14 per cent of the offering of 24,680 bales, was in buyers’ favour but tended to strengthen in price during the day. Halfbred was erratic and inclined in buyers’ favour apart from some stylish lines which brought a high premium. Crossbred was barely firm on recent sales but bidding was spirited on high-yield-ing, well-grown lines. Lateshorn crossbred showed shed

stain, cottiness and tenderness, and suffered by comparison. The Wool Board bid on only 13 per cent of the offering. East and West Europe provided the main competition, supported by New Zealand mills, Bradford and Japan. The adjusted weighted average sale price (awasp) yesterday was 203.23 c per kg.
