Linwood top on water

Yachting in Canterbury is in very good heart, judging by the entry of more than 110 crews for the first combined secondary and primary schools regatta at the Estuary yesterday. Classes ranged from catamarans to the junior Optimist and P class designs, and the success of the venture should assure it of becoming an annual fixture on the sport’s calendar. Linwood High School won the Peter Mander Trophy when its all-girl crew of Sue Hines and Lyn Holland, sailing Kimihia, were the only finishers in the fourth and final heat yesterday. St Andrew’s College was the overall runner-up with Christ-

church Boys’ High School third. Another promising young female skipper, Leslie Egnot, gained line honours in both P class events, but that was not unexpected after her victory in the provincial Tanner Cup trials at Lyttelton last week-end. The other double success was that achieved by Philip Penney, who headed home the Open A class fleet in his Laser.
