Charles holds form

PA Wellington Bob Charles, fresh from his first tournament victory in four years, yesterday steered New Zealand to a onestroke win over Australia in an unofficial golf “test” at the Hutt course. Charles shot a one-under-par 69 to give him and Simon Owen (74) victory over the veteran Australians Peter Thomson (72) and Kel Nagle (72). Britain’s Brian Barnes (71) and Nick Faldo (74) were a further shot back.

It was not great golf and a gallery of nearly 3000 saw the players just going

through the motions, and in Faldo’s case showing that even the best can duff a teeshot. Faldo miscued on the fifth, sending his shot into the crowd and gaining just 50m. However, he salvaged a par five on the hole with a neatly-judged 7m putt. Charles also had some bad moments, his putter lacking the magic of previous days at the Titirangi course in! Auckland. On the sixteenth, he missed from Im, the same distance at which the Australian, Graham Marsh, failed on the final green in Auckland, allowing Charles to win the Air New ZealandShell Open.
