Unemployment

Sir, — B. S. Young (November 30) criticised social workers for defending the unemployed and stated that “they overlook reality in that unemployment is now an economic fact of life.” Could it be that B. S. Young is overlooking the fact that the unemployed are people not just statistics? It seems that social workers are aware of this and consider it in their duty as public servants to defend the people. Maybe if unemployment is a fact of life in New Zealand society today, B. S. Young should throw in his job and go on the benefit. After all, they’ve “never had it better.” — Yours, etc., MIRLA EDMUNDSON. December 1, 1978.
