D.M.Z. tunnels

Sir, —It is unfortunate that vou give prominence to an article from a journalist in Seoul (South Korea) on “Koreans burrowing beneath the D.M.Z.” (November 27). This gives the impression that tunnels are dug by North Koreans in preparation for an invasion of South Korea. There is international unanimity that such a threat does not exist (17 million North Koreans versus 35 million South Koreans). The “tunnel digging” propaganda is an attempt by the unpopular South Korean regime to raily Western public opinion against American troop withdrawals promised by President Carter. North Korea claims that the tunnels were dug by Japanese during the colonial period (disused mines) and that, they are undug by the southern regime to inflame public opinion. Your own article tends to confirm this hypothesis for it states that no continuation to a northern side of the tunnel has been found. — Yours, etc., W. ROSENBERG,

Honorary secretary, N.Z. Democratic People's Republic of Korea Society. November 27, 1978.
