University maintenance
Sir, — Before our nearbankrupt Government, hands over an extra S4M plus as demanded by the universities, it should ensure that the New Zealand taxpayer is going to get a fair return for his money. I understand that New Zealand and Russia are the only countries where a university education is completely free to those who qualify, but in the Soviet Union a graduate wishing to leave Russia, must
first repay to the State, the cost of his education. Here, many graduates immediately leave for Australia and the United Kingdom on graduation, quite openly stating that they can get higher salaries there. Every student desiring free university education, should be required to enter into a bond to remain here for seven years after graduation. Alternatively, they could obtain Americantype educational loans, repa-< yable after they obtain their degrees. Universities encourage graduates to leave, using their departure as a lever to boost academic salaries here. — Yours, etc..
