Cricketers upset

PA Gisborne The Otago tail-ender, Wayne Martin, hit a six in the last over to give his side a one-wicket win over Wellington in the Rothmans under-23 cricket tournament yesterday. However, Wellington was far from happy with the situation. Set 185 runs to win, Otago still needed 26 when the last man, Martin, joined Peter Hills. As tension mounted they reached the last over still needing eight runs for victory.

With six wickets already to his credit, the Wellington fast bowler. Grant Cederwall, was in top form, but the Otago men scrambled three runs from the first four balls. I Then Martin, better known for his prowess as an opening bowler, hit the fifth 'delivery hard and high to the mid-wicket boundary. Wellington’s Richard Reid, son of the former New Zealand captain. John Reid, /made a brilliant two-handed | catch running backwards, (but realising he was on the Ibounaary he threw the bail infield.

Spectators all around the spot signalled a six. The umpires waited for some indication from the fieldsman. Reid indicated that it had not been a six, as he had released the ball before he stepped over the line, but the spectators kept up their calls and the umpire signalled a six. The Wellington players felt the batsmen should just get a single for their one run but the umpires consulted and again signalled a six. The game came to a dramatic end with the plavs* ers still arguing.
