The New Zealander then snatched a 6-5 lead and lost one match [point before clinching the match. | Later Chaloner and Christline Newton beat Wendv Barlow and Lise Senn (Canada), 6-4, 6-3, to give New Zea- | land a clean sweep over Canada. The seventh seed Rumania, was given a kingsized scare by a plucky Italian team yesterday. The Rumanians came from behind to beat Italy, 2-1 after Italy’s No. 2 player, Daniela Porzio, scored a (brilliant singles victory over Forenza Mihai to give the Italians a 1-0 lead in the rubber. In other first-round matches Czechoslovakia beat | Portugal. 3-0. Switzerland ’beat Ireland, 3-0, Yugoslavia beat Norway, 3-0, and Rusjsia accounted for Austria. 3-0, Britain beat Spain 3-0.
