Rhodesian refugees possibility
There has been no discussion yet about whether New Zealand will accept Rhodesian refugees, according to the Minister of Immigration (Mr Gill). “We would of course consider it if there was an appeal from Rhodesia or the United Nations,’’ he said, "but it would be presumptuous of us to start planning to take refugees from a country when we had not been asked.” His comments contradict those of a member of the International Committee of the Red Cross, who was reported in Sydney as saying that discussions with Australia and New Zealand indicated they would admit refugees from Rhodesia.
According to a report, in the “Rhodesian” from Salisbury, the International Red Cross is preparing to help 100,000 Rhodesians flee the country if life becomes untenable for whites in Rhodesia. These people have only Rhodesian citizenship. Most of the 260,000 whites had retained British passports and would be accepted as refugees in many countries, said the report.
