Johnson Report

Sir, — N. L. Bare remarks (November 24): “I fail to see how the teacher of religious studies can be either enthusiastic about or committed to all religions simultaneously or equally.” While such teachers must be “enthusiastic” about their subject they do not need to be “committed” to any or all religions. A non-Hindu can explain Hinduism quite effectively; non-Christians. are quite capable of teaching about Christianity. C. P. Bennetts suggests (November 27), that primary school

children should not be exposed to “teaching about religions.” In fact, primary school children are fascinated by the diversities they discover around them; religious differences are one aspect of these. Already, especially in social studies, some “teaching about religions” is being done. What is desirable is the extension of this approach to Christianity. Such teaching should be distinguished from “Bible-in-Schools,” This programme is outside school-hours and voluntary because it is. as usually presented, “teaching religion” not “teaching about religions.” —Yours, etc..
