Peter McLauchlan (Olympic) who won the recent Gebbies 27 km classic on the Cashmere Hills, showed the benefit of this race when he recorded his personal best time to come third m tbe big annua] Winstone Southland marathon at Invercargill. His time was 2hr 33min 16sec. Brendan Pauley (Otago Univeisity) ran his first marathon to win in 2hr 29min 43sec, and Malcolm Thomas (Invercargill) last year s winner, improved his time to 2h r 29m in 45sec to come second. Other Canterbury piacings were:— B Healey (Olympic), 2:41:19. 6; A. Blackburn (Olympic), 3:3:12. 26: J. Whelan (United). 3:36:15. 51; R Lange (United) 3:49:12, 56: R. Merlo (United), 3:49:26. 58 The Winstone marathon, from Riverton to Invercargill, is New Zealand’s oldest established marathon. It attracted a record entry of 96 starters this year.
