N’ZPA Greenwich. Connecticut. The former heavy-weight boxing champion. Gene Tunney, who remained unbeaten with the help of th e famous long count, died on Tuesday at the age of 81/in Greenwich Hospital. The hospital would not disclose the cause of the death or other details but Tunney's son. former United States Senator John Tunney, said in Los Angeles that his father had died in his sleep of blood poisoning after suffering for
some time from eircuietorj trouble Tunney won the world chan* pionship from Jack Dempsey on September 13, 1924, and retained it on September 12, iflZ, in Chicago. He fought only once more as champion, beating Tom Heeney (New Zealand), and then annonced he wa, quitting at the age of 30. "I had all the money I nee<» ed," he said. "I had not the slightest desire to continue fighting." He had earned about SIM I* his previous three fights.
