Taxing unemployment benefits
Sir, —A spokesman for the Meatworkers’ Union, Mr Cameron, very quickly attacked Mr Bert Walker, the Minister of Social Welfare, and the Government, for considering taxing the unemployment benefit of seasonal workers, like meatworkers. He called it pinpricking and typical of National, to pick on a minority group, but as the average income of a meatworker for eight months work is over $lO,OOO most of us will agree they should not get unemployment benefit at all. Most of us have to live for a year on much less than $lO,OOO. So meatworkers should put some aside, during the season to see them over the off season. What will Mr Cameron say, now, as Labour’s leader, Mr Rowling agrees, in such cases, the benefit should be taxed.— Yours, etc.,
