“A Week of It”

Sir, — W'e have heard that New Zealanders take their politics seriously but could never have dreamed that we would not be able to enjoy a few harmless satirical sketches on our most esteemed political leaders. When the peasants of medieval Europe could make their fool for the day an enjoyable celebration, why cannot we make a few jokes at the fools’ paradise our political leaders conjure up for us every three years at this time? If we want to make non-joking a really serious issue we might even be able to have it legislated for: thou shalt not laugh at politicians as they perform their triennial antics for the amusement of the New Zealand citizenry. After all, the laughter of fools is like the crackling of thorns under a pot.—Yours, etc., KEN HESLIN, GERALDINE O’BRIEN PATRICK RYAN JANICE WALDRON MARY FERIGO

CARMEL DRAPER BEDE DRAPER November 6, 1978.

Sir, — "A Week of It” on Saturday night had a vicious, totally disgraceful attack on Max Cryer. It had no redeeming feature. I do not mind any attack on someone’s style, ways, or values, but I do object to bashing a man for being what he intrinsically is. In this case there was a crudely loaded implication of homosexualitv. It was dirty, low-down and I hope, a once only aberration, for I truly love the programme. I expect fragile masculinity in the Giue Pot Tavern, not among the script writers. — Yours, etc., GEORGE SWEET. November 7, 1978.
