Stop-work at Lyttelton
Seamen from as far away as the West Coast attended one of the biggest stop-work meetings for a long time at Lyttelton on Thursday. The meeting was called by the South Island secretary of the New Zealand Seamen’s Union (Mr T. B. Stuart) to deal with what was described as an internal union matter.
A similar meeting was held at Dunedin yesterday also attended by Mr Stuart. It is believed that the national president of the union (Mr D. Morgan) was called to the meetings but his Wellington office would not confirm this yesterday and would not disclose his whereabouts. In other union activity the Lyttelton Harbour Board Employees’ Union will meet next week to discuss obtaining relativity with containerterminal pay and conditions for some jobs. Lyttelton has three separate working agreements for cargo handling covering the container terminal. conventional shipping, and rollon. roll-off cargo. The meeting will decide
what harbour-board employ-1 ees on the floating crane Rapaki shoulr do to obtain container-terminal rates for any work associated with that terminal. This includes the lifting of containers between conventional ships and the terminal. A similar claim has been made by watersiders assigned to crane jobs. Four watersiders and a tally clerk usually work below the mane.
Fourteen harbour-board employees work on the Rapaki and a change in their pav rates is expected to result in a substantial increase in charges for the floating crane. * * *
A start has been made on the construction of two ships to special specifications listed by Lloyds Register to carry liquid petroleum gas.
The 210 m long ships are being built by Harland and Wolf Shipping in England and will be chartered to Shell to transport L.P.G. from the Brent Field in the North Sea to the United S ites. The L.P.G. will be carried in five independent tanks
