QUAKERS OPPOSE WAR AND WORK FOR PEACE We reject the maiming and killing of persons as a means to any end. Our peace testimony is based on our belief in "that of God" in everyone - making each person infinitely precious - making brotherhood always a hope to struggle for. As individuals and as a church, Friends try to "live in the virtue of that Life and Power that takes away the occasion of all wars". Quakers are one of the few Christian churches with a pacifist tradition. But we don't ignore evil. In the face of injustice, oppression and exploitation we have a history of civil disobedience and protest. Friends try to remove the causes of violence; we research and publish truth about conflicts, sponsor cross-cultural dialogues and seminars and work for peace at the United Nations centres. We try to create a climate for reconciliation and we help the victims on both sides (the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Friends in 1947). If you would like to try our quiet Meeting for Worship, come to our Meeting House at 325 Manchester Street (between Kilmore and Peterborough Streets) on Sundays at 11 a.m.
