Laganbank on her maiden voyage

A maiden-voyage visit by the Bank Line vessel Laganbank yesterday heralded the only shipping movement at the port of Lyttelton over the holiday week-end. The 7544 gross-ton ship was commissioned this year at the Pallion shipyard of Sunderland Shipbuilders, Ltd, in Britain. The general-cargo vessel is one of several built for

Bank Line in almost unique process where ships are constructed under cover and floated out after completion of most of the interior fitting — compared with the traditional launching of the hull. Possible future shipping links between the po'rt of Lyttelton and the Pacific Forum Line are in jeopardy unless somebody comes to the aid of the struggling comparatively new shipping venture.

The service had a poor: start from Lyttelton when aj scheduled sailing did not: take place and containers: consigned to New Guinea: with frozen products were; left oh the wharf. The line’s agent, the New Zealand Shipping Corpora-; tion, made good the problem| and shipped the containers to Australia to link with Other shipping lines — at no charge to the consignors. Now the Pacific Forum Line is seeking short-term relief from member Governments in the Pacific ter stayj afloat. The problem was; spelt out at a South Pacific: Forum at Alofi, Niue, but) there have been no indica-i toins of the response.

The New Zealand Govern-i ment is believed to have re-1 acted immediately by I offering to increase its over-I draft guarantee from $150,000 to $250,000. An increase in share capi-1 tai is one of the longer-term; possibilities members have i been asked to consider. The Forum Line began! business in May this year with three chartered vessels and a capital of $90,000. Now it is seeking more overdraft guarantees, concessionary charter rates from member countries — including Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands — guaranteed cartage of Government cargoes, softterm loans, suspension of port dues, duty and tax concessions, and assistance with trade promotions.
