Junior tennis favourites prevail
In most cases the seedings for the Haywrignts Canterbury junior hard-court; tennis championships at Wilding Park were proved correct yesterday when the finals were completed. All went according to plan! in the under 19 age group. Philip Seeman (Otago) justified his top seeding in the boys’ singles by overwhelming Stephen Chambers, and Ann Davidson, although pushed a little closer by Nicki Robinson, won the girls’ final in straight sets. The top seeds in the doubles also won in straight sets without to much difficulty although Angela Pickering and Cecilia Burke had their chance in the second set to take the fancied combination of Misses Davidson and Robinson to the decider. The biggest surprise occurred in the final of the under 17 girls’ singles. Sally Hughey, seeded fourth, upset her better performed opponent, Angela Brading, in the semi-finals. There was no questioning the superiority of Miss Hughey, who
fallowed her second-seeded i rival only three games in J the two sets. j Miss Hughey was opposed by the top seed, Ruth Seemlan (Otago) in the final, but [again she proved equal to the occasion and overcame her southern opponent m straight sets. The under 17 boys’ singles final was won by the top seed, Alistair Chapman, in straight sets against the unseeded, Paul Beumelburg. However, Beumelburg was a worthy finalist. He extended Chapman to 7-5 in the first set and kept the pressure on Jin the second. As the wind freshened, I Beumelburg found difficulty in controlling his serve in the second set and when Chapman broke his service to love and took the lead, 5-3, in the second set. the match looked over. But the lean Beumelburg fought back to take Chapman’s service without conceding a point, capitalising fully on his opponent’s mistakes.
I Undeterred, Chapman succeeded again in breaking I service, helped considerably by Beumelburg twice doublefaulting. However, he won I the match in style, winning 'the last point with a strong, flowing backhand. 1 Jeffrey Bennett was a surprise winner of the under 15 boys’ singles, but he did it the hard way, beating the top seed, Mark Crosbie, in the semi-finals. The top-seed-ed girl, Julianne Taylor, found the second-seeded Jan Pickering too strong in the third set of their final. John Robinson, seeded (second, beat the top seed, [John Honeywell (South [Canterbury), in the under 13 'boys’ singles final, and those two players teamed well to win the doubles.
