Journalists’ strike
Sir, — It is said that the power of the pen is mightier than the sword and I firmly believe this to be true. It follows, therefore, that journalists should be of the highest possible integrity, and I believe that in most cases this also is true. The present holding to ransom of the freedom of the press, the thing which should rank the highest in their principles, is making me have doubts. If a Government were to use the same tactics as these striking journalists they would be the very first to use their power to bring to heel, or at least discredit, those responsible; It saddens me to associate names of those whose honesty and sense of values I respect, with the present anarchic actions. — Yours, MARY REEVE. Hokitika. October 14, 1978.
