Lyttelton base for U.S. ship

From CEDRIC MENTIPLAY The United States research vessel Knorr will use Lyttelton as a base whil: ' conducting a research programme in the South Pacific. The Knorr left. Wellington recently to collect oceanographic instruments which were moored off Campbell Island five months ago by the New Zealand research vessel Tangaroa. Both ships are participating in an international series of tests on ocean currents, temperatures,

and meteorological factors. The Knorr will use specialised satellite navigation equipment to find the instruments, which are in 300 metres of water off Campbell Island.

The Knorr will make a second trip from Lyttelton on October 12, carrying two Danish and two Russian scientists, and on November 16 she will take two New Zealand scientists on a research trip. The ship, of 1806 gross tonnes, is run by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, of Massachusetts.
