Lady in waiting

An extra bonus for a party of 27 South Islanders who went racing at Hastings last Saturday was the chance to inspect the great race mare, Leilani, these days a mother-to-be. Members of “The Press” and Air New Zealand racing tour who were flown north on Saturday morning inspected Leilani at Mr Norman Hawthorne’s Paramount Stud not long before they flew out of Napier on Sunday morning. The winner of 14 races and only unplaced twice in 29 starts for stake eanings of $270,870, Leilani will foal this spring to Silver Dream, and has been booked to the Paramount Stud stallion In the Purple, the sire of the Melbourne Cup winner, Gold And Black.

Gold And Black, Diplomatic Agent, and the Paramount Stud’s most recent purchase, the French-bred Avaray, were also paraded for the South Islanders.
