School courts offered
A new tennis club with the potential to challenge the position of the established clubs in Christchurch is to be formed soon. In a move unprecedented in the city, the headmaster of Christchurch Boys High School, Mr I. D. Leggat, approached the H. 5.0.8. rugby club with a proposal to • throw open the school’s sixcourt complex for the use of a tennis club. The members would be drawn from the surrounding community and old boys of the school A steering committea for the new Te Kura club was formed some time ago, and a committee member, Mr Peter Andrew, said a meet* ing would be held tomorrow night at the club rooms of the H. 5.0.8. rugby club in Ayr Street, Riccarton, to discuss the tennis club. Interested members of the publid were welcome to attend, he said. “Te Kura tennis club could make use of the six courts at the school, as well as the two courts at the Boys’ High hostel, Adams House,” said Mr Andrew, “Mr Leggatt has given his permission for the courts to be used by the community, and we are hopeful that a good number of people in the area would be interested (in coming to the meeting on ! Wednesday."
Mr Andrew said he did not know at this stage whether or not the fledgling club would seek affiliation to the Canterbury Lawqi Tennis Association and take part in the inter-club competition — “That would be for the meeting to talk about” — but he said that if such a move should be made, the Te Kura club would be able to field teams in several grades.
