Tavern plan rejected
Proposals for shops and a tavern near the corner of Linwood Avenue and Dyers Road have been rejected by the Christchurch City Council. Sited in a residential zone, the Bromley subdivision commercial complex would have been in Kidbrooke Street. But a hearings panel was not satisfied that there should be a tavern anywhere in the residential zone. A site near the future Bromley Community Centre was preferred, possibly in a nearby industrial zone. Traffic from other areas, and probable turning move-
i i ments from Linwood Avenue, f were two reasons for rejectsi ing the entire proposal. The 71 site proposed suggested that - the development’s neighbour;hood function was “inciden:,:tal or secondary” to the; - attraction of outside custom-; e.ers. :. The panel agreed that a! t; future estimated residential e population of 3750 in the area e could support two small commercial centres to serve a e local need. e But such centres should be a placed where their impact on homes and the traffic network would be minimal, said the “i panel.
