N.Z. in ‘depressed mood’
PA Wellington Anyone who returns to New Zealand after being overseas for any length of time finds the country in a strange depressed mood, according to Mr G. D. L. White, the recently-retired Ambassador to Washington. “One finds many uncertainties and doubts — it
seems nothing is as easy as it used to be,” he said in Wellington. “There are all sorts of prophets of gloom around this town, but I am not going to be one of them. With energy and initiative, we can solve our problems,” said Mr White, who has returned to live in New Zealand.
“Maybe It is a good thing that we have been shaken out of our complacency. The truth is that we have had it fairly easy for quite a long time, but the world does not owe us a living,” he said. Mr White was New Zealand Ambassador to the United States for the last five years.
