Boock upsets Worcester

Clever exploitation of bowling footmarks by Stephen Boock put New Zealand into a winning position on the third morning of the match with Worcestershire at New Road last night (New Zealand time). Boock took four of the five wickets which fell in the first hour and three quarters, Worcestershire then being 112 for 5, still 14 runs behind.

As the day started Alan Ormrod went half forward to one from Boock and it turned prodigiously to hit his off-stump. Two balls later Dilip Patel was also all at sea and this was a bat-pad catch to Howarth.

Ted Hemsley and Barry Jones then put together a useful partnership of over 50 before Jones thrashed at Brendon Bracewell, and Edwards took the catch. New Zealand was on the march again when Boock whipped one across Hemsley for Howarth at his silly point position to take a smart catch. That brought Boock’s figures during the morning to three for eight from 10.3 overs.

Basil d’Oliveira made a typically quiet and composed start, and he loomed large as a threat to New Zealand’s advance. With him was a tall-left-hander, Stephen Henderson, who had shown stubborn resistance in the first innings. But he did not last long. He was beaten in the air by Boock, and bowled. Just before lunch d’Oliveira was run out for 21, and Worcestershire was 145 for six.

A resourceful stand between Jock Edwards and Richard Hadlee' gave New Zealand a reasonably comfortable position at the end of the second day of the match against Worcestershire.

They scored 93 in 77min

for the seventh wicket to take New Zealand to 319 and a first-innings lead of 126. Edwards put together his biggest score since Hove, the second match of the tour, and he behaved very well. There was a mistake here and there, and he was missed in the slips at 20, but he applied himself verv well, and did not allow the situation to deprive him of his strong scoring strokes. Hadlee also batted particularly well to reach 40, easily his highest tour score. He used to reach well to smother or drive Gifford. For much of the time Dilip Patel was on at the other end with off-spin and he bowled usefully. The scoreboard after the second day:— WORCESTERSHIRE First innings ... 193 NEW ZEALAND First inning J.
