A 25-year-old quadrapalegic mountain climber, Bruce Burgess (above) gets some practice in for his attempt to climb Mount Ruapehu next week. He will be strapped into a specially designed 451 b sledge and hauled by two groups of six experienced climbers to within 160 metres of the summit of the 2800 m mountain. From there Bruce, a cereba) palsy victim, will
crawl to the top and plant a victory flag. Plans for the ascent began three months ago after Bruce attended a course at the Outdoor Pursuits Centre near Turangi. The centre’s director. Mr Graeme Dingle, encouraged him and arranged for a local sports equipment manufacturer to build and give the sledge. The $7OO- - will remain at the centre to be used for disabled persons and emergencies.
