Round-robin hockey
Deteriorating ground conditions, but a more relaxed approach, were features of the first matches in a roundrobin series being played by the Canterbury Hockey Association on Saturday. The nine senior teams were augmented by SelwynI Hiilmorton’s senior B team —- the winner of its grade. I With the pressure of the [“serious” competition no (longer hanging over them, (many players slowed the pace at which they moved, and the play improved.
Results were.— Section 1: University 4 (Barry Maister 2, John Christensen, Frank Borren); Woolston W.M.C.
2 (Stewart Tasker). SelwynHillmorton 2 (Doug Williamson); Harewood 2 (Balvant Bhana, Dick Pettit). Section 2: High School Old Boys 2 (Greg Armstrong, Geoff Gibsonj; Redcliffs 1 (Peter Christensen), Sydenham 1 (Steve Ambler); Pegasus 1 (Paul Gardiner). Skilled pedestrians The University-W.W.M.C. encounter was pedestrian in pace, with University outwitting Woolston with the science of slowmotion hockey. For University, Neil Edmundson had a good game at centre forward, as did Greg Pierce on the right wing. Woolston’s Stewart Tasker, as always led by example. Cottesmore clash On a Cottesmore surface which Is at present better than most. Harewood and Selwyn-Hillmorton struggled to better each other [and failed. But. in many exchanges the ambition seemed I more to maim than overcome
and in this some success was achieved. Both Mark Burtt and George Carnoutsos suffered injuries. For Harewood, Dick Pettit continued to play soundly, while Carnoutsos, for Selwyn, was as incisive as ever. Old Boys improve High School Old Boys revived itself to deservedly beat Redcliffs. It was an open, even game on the Porritt Park oval, which provided hockey of a reasonable standard. Pegasus short ’ For Pegasus, an abysmal start Jto the match, when only 10 players turned up to meet Sydenham, was compounded when Bernard I Saw tell was injured and the team [was forced to play with nine men. That it managed to draw, reflects some credit on those nine.
The first half was an even affair, but in the second half, play deteriorated and became scrappy and indecisive.
