S.I. series to Murdoch
Third place in the Ross McCully Nelson rally on Saturday was enough to give the talented Timaru driver, Wayne Murdoch, the South Island rally series. Murdoch failed to win any of the five rounds, but consistency, with a second, two thirds, an eighth and a discarded did-not-finish, gave him the edge over his rivals. The surprise winner of the! Nelson rally was the eighteenth seed, Alan Hewlett (Kumara, Escort RS2000). lan Begg (Wyndham, Mazda RX3) was second, giving him third place in the South Island series.

The local hope, Dave: Parkes (Escort 1600) was leading at lunch-time but got stuck in the snow in the Golden Downs Forest and lost time, eventually finishing seventh.
