Community service grants
Sir, — With the imminent payment of my rates to the City Council, a sour note has crept in. I am happy to be able to support and enjoy the many amenities provided for everyone’s health and well-being. But I now require prompt assurance from the City Council that I am supporting the highly repugnant activities of the vociferous S.O.S. group. I cannot support such an iconoclastic activity, and ask to be excused from unwilling participation. — Yours, etc., LORNA ANKER. August 15, 1978.
Sir, — In reply to S. M. Wells (August 18), I was paraphrasing another letter when I endorsed a grant to S.O.S. If 1 was a resident in the local body area I would endorse such a grant. I aggree with S. M. Wells that ideally ratepayers should have the choice of where their money goes. In reply to P. A. Williams (August 18), if the New Zealand abortion law reflected the wishes of the. people there would be no need for S.O.S. We need specialist, non-
profit clinics here. If the council gave a grant to S.O.S. it would not be “condoning the activities of a group which is extreme to say the least, in its proabortion views”, but supporting 64 per cent of the public who regard the abort tion decision as a “private matter between the people concerned.” The 10 per cent of the public who support the present law should not deny the rest their right to choose. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) PAT WILKINSON. August 18, 1978.
