10,000 sign plea

More than 10,000 peoole had now signed the petition calling for heavier penalties against drunken driving, said the petitions organiser, Mr Martin Keen. These signatures were gathered in Christchurch and Mr Keen is also waiting for others from the North Island. The petition, started in September last year, will be presented to the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan) in Wellington on September 8. Mr Keen said he was very pleased with the Christchurch response.
