New marine branch
A maritime policy branch has been established in the Ministry of Transport. Mr Stewart Milne, of Wellington, has been appointed chief controller of the new branch. He was chief controller of marine administration. The new branch will advise the Government on international and local shipping and port services. It will also introduce policy on the use of coastal areas. Any proposals, surveys and studies of shipping links between New Zealand and the South Pacific will be evaluated by the branch. It will also plan such services.
