Govt ready to act on works
PA Auckland The Government is ready .o apt. to ensure that the new freezing industry killing;: season is-not reduced toUthe? “calamity" of last season, according to-,, the Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon). In Auckland yesterday he said that his greatest concern lay in achieving an award agreement in the industry which would, enable the next season to start in mid-October. He told a meeting of the Bureau of Importers and Exporters that if the season did not start on time there was little hope of a Christmas bonus for New Zealand to Britain. Mr Gordon said he was “crossing his fingers and knees” in the hope that some responsibility and common sense would prevail in the industry—in spite of the pending court session involving men at the Ocean Beach works. “The Government is ready to act, even if reluctantly,” he said. The season which had just ended was “nothing short of a calamity.” Mr Gordon made no apology for issuing a “blister” earlier this year to company management at certain ’ South Island works. The Meat Workers’ Union had not been free from blame either, he said.
