Former Minister resigns
PA Auckland Planned Government action over Auckland ferrv services has led a former Minister of Marine (Mr W. J. Scott) to resign from the National Party. Mr Scott, who is a director of the North Shore Ferry Company, will also advise the company to sue the Government for damages. His announcement, last evening, came after a telegram from the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan) saying that the Government would proceed with retrospective legislation, which was likely to dash the ferry company’s hopes for a licence to run a service from Bayswater to Auckland. Mr McLachlan has promoted the Transport Amendment No. 2 Bill as legislation to correct an anomalv in the Transport Act. Mr Scott) however, sees the bill as “riding roughshod over the North Shore Ferry Company.”
Last week he went to Wellington and had discussions with both Mr McLachlan and the Minister of Justice (Mr Thomson) over the legislation. He suggested that it either be referred to the former Prime Minister (Sir John Marshall) for an opinion on constitutional grounds, or referred to a select committee so that the company could state its case.
