Methanol ‘not wanted’
[ PA Wellington The inability of the Naturlal Gas Corporation to convince energy authorities to promote the manufacture of methanol has been “its greatest failure and disappointment,” according to the corporation’s annual re-j port, tabled in Parliament. Six years ago the corporation sought to promote hanol for use either as an industrial chemical or as an extender in motor fuel. “The circumstances at the Kapuni gas field appeared to make this a most profitable venture, and would at the same time have provided a major pilot plant experience which must surely have been valuable for the inevitable decision to go in for methanol manufacture.” said the report. However, it said the decision to extract liquid petroleum gas had been very profitably justified. “The very large investment (almost SI3M) to enable raw gas to be supplied to the New Plymouth power station
was without question ahighly profitable one for the | corporation and even morel so for the Electricity De-I partment.” The corporation, in the year to March 31, had an operating profit of SI3M, [said the report.
