Coast body
Something less cumbersome and less irritating to some groups than the proposed Maritime Planning Authority is needed to manage coastal waters in this area, according to chairman of the North Canterbury Catchment Board (Dr W. R. Holmes'). The board was discussing a letter from the Canterbury Regional Planning Authority offering to act as a Maritime Planning Authority, if this body was considered necessary. Dr Holmes said he had vet to be convinced that there was a real need to set up another planning authority to carry out one task. Christchurch had a management problem rather than a planning problem. He believed that the City Council’s main interest in the proposed authority was the management of the estuary. There were pa-ts of New Zealand, such as built up areas where there were conflicting types of water use and such an organisation was very valuable. Dr Holmes told the meeting.
