Successful meeting

The Canterbury Jockey Club wound up one of its most successful Grand National meetings on record at Riccarton on Saturday.

On-course bets on Grand National Hurdles day total led $323,432 an increase of $45,905. The off-course total on Saturday was $617,738. This was $391,363.50 down on last year, when the club raced without competition on the day of a rugby test, but up $107,425 on the corresponding day in 1976. On-course betting for the three days this year totalled $1,160,702, an increase of $127,100 on last year.
