Bishops’ middle course

I PA Canterbury (England) The world’s Anglican Bishops yesterday avoided taking a clear decision on whether they should approve ordination of women priests, an issue which has split their communion. New Zealand is among the countries which have taken a lead in ordaining women priests. The day before the conference criticised these countries for their actions. The 440 Anglican Bishops assembled at the Lambeth Conference — the major consultative assembly which they hold every 10 years — passed a compromise resolution. This urged Anglican church leaders in different countries to decide for themselves whether women should be ordained while keeping unity within their church and with others.
