Surprising no totals in the clean and jerk by two English litters. Kevin Welch and Alan Winterbourne, allowed Phillip Sue (New Zealand' to take the bronze medal in the light weight) 167.5kg' division of weight-lifting yesterday. Welch led after the snatch when he broke the Games record of 120 kg with a lift of 122.5 kg. But he failed in his three attempts to lift 150 kg in the clean and jerk Winterbourne was in fourth place on bodyweight with a lift of 115 kg. ahead of Sue on the same weight in the snatch but also failed in his three lifts in the clean and jerk. Two Australians. Basilios Stel-1 llos and Adrian Kebbe. won the! gold and silver medals respec-i tlvely. Stellios, aged 19, set a new Com-1
monwealth junior record of 120 kg in the snatch and went in to set a junior record also fo the clean and ferk at. 152.5 kg This together witn the combined totals of 272.5 kg, gave him :, I new Commonwealth Game., re I cord, the previous clean and jerk record being 149.5 kg and 1-e ; total record 260 kg. However, it was Sue who first broke the Games total record n I his second attempt to lift 147.5 kg Ito glv e a total of 262.5 kg Missing his first clean and jerk lift of 147.5 kg cost him the gold said Sue. He failed in his third lift of 157.5 kg. which would have given him the gold medal ahead ; of Steliios on bodyweight. "The bar caught me in the throat and 1 started to black out,” he said. “It has not hap pened for five years. I started to sway but I thought I could hold the bar at my chest as long as possible to clear my head.” Sue said that he had lifted • 162.5 kg tn training and had lifted la total of 280 kg in the snatch I and clean and jerk when quali tying for the Montreal Olympics lin 1976.
