Manawatu retains Shield
A much-improved Manawatu convincingly beat Horowhenua, 42-14, to hold the Ranfurly Shield, at Palmerston North on Saturday.
Horowhenua was in no way disgraced, showing pace in the backs and holding the strong Manawatu pack well in the forward battles.
In spite of Horowhenua’s gutsy effort, Manawatu was always superior. Conceding weight in the scrum, Manawatu held the tightheads to three all; conceding height, it won the line-outs convincingly, and also dominated the racks and mauls. For Manawatu, John Loveday, Geoff Old, Kevin Eveleigh, Terry Sole, and Perry Harris were particularly convincing forwards, and in the backs Lachlan Cameron and Mike O’Cailaghan added punch to the attack. For Horowhenua, Mike Nutting looked a class player on the wing and the captain I. Ongiey also played well. Scorers were:
Manawatu: K. Granger, H. Blair, J. Carroll, P. Harris, G. Knight, W. Green, tries; Carroll, two field goals; M. Banks, two penalties and three conversions. Horowhenua: M. Nutting, W. Doyle, J. MacKenzie, tries; M. Liddicoat, a conversion.
